SSRE stands for "selective serotonin reuptake enhancer," and the essential function of SSRE antidepressant drugs is to help the brain reabsorb (or reuptake) more of the serotonin that it produces.

TCA Antidepressant Drugs

TCA antidepressant drugs, or TriCyclic Antidepressants are a class of drugs that help balance the neurotransmitter chemicals made by and utilized by nerve cells. TCA antidepressants increase levels of serotonin and norepinephrine by blocking their reabsorption into the source cell.

MAOI Antidepressant Drugs

MAOI antidepressant drugs treat depression by blocking the enzyme monoamine oxidase A. This enzyme breaks down the naturally occurring chemicals in the brain that help control mood. MAOI antidepressant drugs are effective, but not the first medications that a doctor or psychiatrist would use to treat depression.

Augmenter Antidepressant Drugs

In patients who require Augmenter antidepressant drugs to medicate their depression, drugs prescribed are Lithium or triiodothyronine known as T3. There are other neuroleptics or anti-psychotic drugs that are prescribed for patients who need augmentation.
