What Are Augmenter Antidepressant Drugs?

In patients who require Augmenter antidepressant drugs to medicate their depression, drugs prescribed are Lithium or triiodothyronine known as T3. There are other neuroleptics or anti-psychotic drugs that are prescribed for patients who need augmentation. Augmenter antidepressant drugs are prescribed for melancholic patients and do better while on augmentation that non melancholic patients.Augmenter antidepressant drugs such as T3 is added to the antidepressant. TCA drugs or tricyclic antidepressants augment SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Augmenter antidepressant drugs can substitute for the other. If no response is seen on one drug, change to the other augmenter antidepressant drug.

Paroxetine and fluoxetine increase TCA levels in the blood. Sertaline does not increase TCA levels as much in the patient's blood. The patient's blood is tested carefully while on Augmenter antidepressant drugs. If SSRIs are showing no response in the patient, TCA is introduced slowly and built up in dosage. The patient is not kept on Augmenter antidepressant drugs for very long because of severe side effects including tardive dyskinesia. Augmentations recommended for Augmenter antidepressant drugs are benzodiazepines such as alprazolam. Clonazepam helps in the treatment of paranoid thinking when combined with neuroleptic. A list of neuroleptics that are used as Augmenter antidepressant drugs are Chlorpromazine, Clozapine, Fluphenazine, Haloperidol, Loxapine, Mesoridazine, Molindone, Perphenazine, Pimozide, Thioridazine, Thiothixene, Trifluoperazine and Risperidone. These drugs are commonly used as anti psychotic medications but are used for patients who are being treated for depression and are showing mildly or severe psychotic symptoms as well.
